What is Xarelto used for?
Rivaroxaban, or otherwise known as Xarelto is a prescription medicine used to:
- Reduce stroke and blood clots risk in people who are having a medical condition known as ‘atrial fibrillation*’ that is caused by a heart valve problem.
- Treat and prevent blood clots.
- Treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli following hip or knee surgery.
* In atrial fibrillation, part of the heart doesn’t beat the way it should.
What medications should not be taken with Xarelto?
Make sure to avoid taking Xarelto with painkillers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen or other anticoagulants that can increase your bleeding risk.
Important note: Make sure you discuss your health condition before taking any medication with Xarelto as it interacts with many different prescription and non-prescription drugs.
What not to eat when taking Xarelto?
If you are taking Xarelto, you should absolutely avoid drinking or eating Grapefruit. you can choose an alternative citrus beverage like orange juice.
When you take Xarelto it will be processed in the intestines by certain enzymes. Unfortunately, Grapefruit and Grapefruit juice contain compounds that slow down this process. So, when you consume Grapefruit; Xarelto’s amount will increase in your blood and cause many complications like bleeding from the gum, nosebleeds, dark stool and unusual bruising.
If your doctor or nutritionist told you to drink or eat Grapefruit, tell them you are taking Xarelto immediately.
