You Asked! We Answered
In today’s blog, we will answer some of the most frequently asked questions about medications.
Some of my medications have expired. Is it still safe to use them?
While some medications may not be harmful if taken beyond the expiration date, Alma Health clinical experts do not recommend doing so!
Over time, some ingredients in medications can change or degrade. For many medications, they will simply be less effective past their expiration date.
However, some medications may actually be harmful if taken after they expire, such as aspirin, liquid antibiotics, and nitroglycerin. For this reason, always read and follow expiration dates.
What is the right way to store my medications?
For most medications, the answer is in a cool, dry place. Unlike what you see in movies, the “medicine cabinet” in your bathroom is NOT a cool, dry place!
If you need to refrigerate your medication, place it in a separate shelf or drawer, and keep it away from food.
Other medications have specific instructions. If you are unsure about how to store your medications, please do not hesitate to ask one of our US-trained clinical pharmacists.
In all cases, make sure your medications are out of reach of children and pets.
Does it really matter if I take my medications with or without food?
The short answer is yes! If the instructions indicate that you take your medicine “without food” or “on an empty stomach”, this means that food will lower the absorption of your medication and you may not get the full dose. For these medications, take them either 1 hour before or 2 hours after food.
For instructions that indicate that you take your medicine “with food” or “with a meal”, this means that taking it with food will reduce stomach and intestinal irritation, and for some, even increase absorption of the medication.
